INFORMATION SHEET
TENNECO WEST, INC.-VICTOR FRUIT OPERATIONS
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
Tenneco West, Inc. operates a fruit and vegetable processing facility on State
Highway 12, west of Victor, California. Site activities include fresh fruit and
vegetable packing, storage and shipping, cherry brining and management of grape
vineyards. The most recent former owner of the site was Victor Fruit Growers.
Tenneco's operations intermittently discharge an average of 20,000 gpd (0.88
1/sec) of wastewater to a series of six shallow settling ponds and 11 acres
(4.45 ha) of vineyards. Domestic wastes are discharged to a septic tank leach-
field system. Surface water runoff may be discharged to either the Victor storm
drain system or to the disposal ponds.
During the last two years, Tenneco has implemented improved wastewater disposal
methods which should prevent a recurrence of a past odor nuisance problem.
A Negative Declaration was adopted by the San Joaquin County Planning Department
on 23 December 1980 and a Conditional Use Permit was issued by the San Joaquin
County Board of Zoning Adjustment on 8 January 1981. One condition of the use
permit was that Tenneco obtain Waste Discharge Requirements from the Regional
Board.
Soils in the area consist of Hanford sandy loam underlain by Pamona sandy loam
and Rocklin loam. Ground water occurs at approximately 80 feet (24.4 m) below
ground surface. Mean annual precipitation is approximately 15 inches.
Staff and Tenneco are jointly reviewing the ground water monitoring alternatives
to assure the method of disposal (evaporation/percolation) will not adversely
affect the beneficial uses of ground water underlying the site.
REF:sb
Amended 6/25/82
