The most common and preferred method of drilling is
with a hollow stem auger which allows sampling with the auger still in place, maintaining the integrity of
the bore hole. A hand auger cannot prevent sloughing in the bore hole and subsequent sampling would be
unacceptable. A truck mounted hollow stem auger drill rig provides the ability to use a California modified
split-spoon sampler containing three, six inch long, two inch diameter brass tubes. This sampler can be
driven 18 inches ahead of the hollow stem auger by a 140 pound hammer with a 30 inch drop in accordance
with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) methods. The blows required to drive the sampler
at each six inch interval should be recorded in the boring log. Once the sampler is removed, the bottom
tube should be sealed and labelled and placed on ice until it can be delivered under chain of custody to the
lab for analysis. Soil in the top two sections should be used for soil identification and lab duplicates.
Stratigraphic data and field observations should be noted on a log prepared for each boring/well. Samples
should be collected at every five foot interval and at significant changes in lithology and at intervals of
obvious contamination in order to develop a complete profile of soil contamination.
Since this site is being placed in the Local Oversight Program (LOP), the LUFT Manual and Tri-Regional
Guidelines will be used to evaluate the work performed at this site. (Copies of the Tri-Regional Guidelines
and "Appendix A" are enclosed.) As stated in the Tri-Regional Hoard Staff Recommendation Appendix A, all
work and reports which require geologic or engineering evaluation and/or judgments must be performed
under the direction of an appropriately registered or certified professional. (See sections 6735, 7835, and
7835.1 of the Business and Professions Code.) Also Rule 415 of the Professional and Vocational Regulations
is to be followed which states:
"A professional engineer...registered or licensed under this Code shall practice and perform
engineering...work only in the field or fields in which he is by education and/or experience fully
competent and proficient."
A Dklsilrrl nr Cm.fir raga in(:oWily Ilvallh I.ar•r•S,(njt •s
