KEI-J90-0611.R1
September 24 , 1990
Page 2
I FIELD ACTIVITIES
I KEI ' s field work was conducted on June 18, 1990, when one 550
gallon waste oil tank was removed from the site. The tank, was
made of steel and numerous holes as large as three-inches in
diameter were observed in the tank. Mr. William Snavely of -the
San Joaquin County Public Health Services was present during ,tank
removal and subsequent soil sampling.
One soil sample, labeled WO1, was collected from beneath , the
waste oil tank at a depth of approximately 10 feet. After
further excavation, an additional sample, labeled W01(14) , , was
collected from the waste oil tank pit at a depth of approximately
14 feet. Ground water was initially encountered at a depth of
about 14 . 5 feet, then rose to a depth of approximately. 13 feet.
After minor lateral excavation, limited due to the proximity of
' the waste oil tank pit to the underground fuel storage tank pit,
three soil samples were collected from the sidewalls (labeled
SWA, SWB and SWC) of the excavation 6 to 12 inches above the
observed water level. Samples were collected from bulk material
excavated by backhoe. Samples were placed in clean, two-'inch
diameter brass tubes, sealed with aluminum foil, plastic caps and
f tape, and stored in a cooled ice chest for delivery to a cer-
tified laboratory. Sample locations are as shown on the attached
Site Plan.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
The subsurface soils exposed in the excavations consisted
primarily of silty clay to the maximum depth explored'-('14. 5
feet) .
ANALYTICAL RESULTS
All samples were analyzed by Sequoia Analytical Laboratory in
Redwood City, California and were accompanied by properly
executed Chain of Custody documentation. All soil samples :were
analyzed for total extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (TEPH)
using EPA method 3550 in conjunction with modified 8015, benzene,
I toluene, xylenes and ethylbenzene (BTX&E) using EPA method 8020,
halogenated volatile organics using EPA method 8010, polychlorin-
ated biphenyls using EPA 8270, .and metals - cadmium, chromium,
3 lead and zinc.
Analytical results of the soil samples, collected from the waste
oil tank pit, indicate levels of TEPH ranging from 3 .7 ppm to 640
PPM- Analyses of sample WO1 by EPA method 8010 indicate the
presence of four detectable constituents at concentrations
