V
The Beverage Source
202/799-5030
March 15, 1988
PROPOSED SCOPE OF WORK
The proposed scope of work would involve drilling sail
borings and collecting soil samples in order to generate soil
profiles defining the vertical and horizontal extent of the
contamination. Water sampling would be performed to ascertain
subsurface water conditions. It is GTI ' s opinion that the soil
contamination is probably concentrated in a limited area (not
laterally extensive) due to the predominance of sandy soils
present in the soil column at depth. However, GTT feels it is
important to clearly define the soil as well as the groundwater
contamination. The groundwater would be sampled by deepening 3
of the soil borings to a depth of 15-feet below first encountered
water (or to 70 feet , whichever occurs first) . The following
specific work steps detail GTI 's approach:
o Drill 8 soil borings to approximately 50-feet below
grade.
o Collect soil samples at 5-foot intervals (see Appendix
I, Standard Operating Procedures [SOPS] 14 and 15) .
Three selected samples from each boring, based on field
inspection will be analyzed for total petroleum
hydrocarbons using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) Method 418 . 1 ; benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and
xylene (BTEX) ; total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline
using EPA Modified Method 5030/8015/8020; and
polynuclear aromatics (PNAs) using EPA Method 8100.
a Deepen 3 of the 8 soil borings to approximately 70 feet
or to 15-feet below first encountered water (whichever
occurs first) .
o Convert the 3 deepened borings to monitoring wells by
installing 2-inch-diameter, 0.020-inch slot, PVC well
screen to 15-feet above expected high water level and
finish to the surface with blank PVC casing. The
annulus of the well will be packed with No. 2 clean-
3
