reason lar the higher standing water level is not known. One
supposition could be that the groundwater lying either under or
in the clayey sand described was in contact with a localized
perched water zone, which had a standing water level higher than
the surrounding groundwater.
On April 12, 1989, CES, under the direction of JTO, collected
water samples from the excavation and soil samples from around
the pit wall at about -38' to -40' g . l . There was about 5 ' of
water in the pit at this time. The sample collection Nvas not
witnessed by the DHS; however , these data are available, they
were run by a certified laboratory and they should be at least
considered as a part of the overall picture. Both water and .soil
samples could be considered to be "combined" in that the water
presumeably entered the pit from all directions , owing to the
flat layering of the beds , and the soil samples were stated as
being "combined" in Appendix A- 12. The laboratory work is
presented in Appendix A-10a. Table A below sums the results . The
samples were tested for BTEX, TEH and TPH using current EPA
methods 8020 , 8015 and GC/FID 3550 3c 5030.
Table A
So i 1 1.1ater Water TEPH
mg/kg mg/l mg/t
838920 838925 838922
Gasoline ND 10. In this report, the data pre-
sented in Table A is referred to but was not presented. Further
excavations at the site are also discussed.
