_ -
w
Industrial 11'el I M-A shown on the sarnpl ing plan map relers to one
of thrvc old water supply wells iris laIIed and used prior to City
.Vater avaiIabifity. They were still open as of July 17, 1989,
when the sampling plan was approved by the IHS . Abandonment of
these wells are covered later herein.
All operations and sampling for testing included as Appendices
A-15, A-16 , A17, A- 18, and A-21 were witnessed by representatives
of the DHS. Di;S was informed of operations reported on in Appen-
dix A-20, but declined to witness them. These operations inr. Iude
all phases of sample collection, preservation and documentation.
Tables 13-1 , E-2 and C following are tabulations of the sampling
and testing of m,iterials from the excavated pit area.
DISCU.,.iIQN OF TLST RESULTS
The sampling and testing, as noted earlier , was not witnessed by
the writer ; however , with one exception, was witnessed by DHS,
and the soil sampling plan had been approved by DHS.
Groundwater
Groundwater had seeped into the pit and filled it to about -35'
g. l . This was during the summer dry season and rainfall was not a
factor. Mostof the seepage water was pumped out in the . third
week of July, 1989, immediately prior to sampling. The.v.ater was
disposed of ' into the old Winerysettlingponds on the north and
west sides ' of t roperty. Approval for the `disposal was
recieved from th ❑ , w-i-th .consultation with the CVRAQCB After
pumping, there was still a shallow-pool -at the deepest part of
the excavation, but the sides and most of the bottom-were dry
enough for sampling.
The first samples were collected on July 20, 1989, ju:,t three\
days after the July 17, 1989 date stamped on the sampling program
plat (Appendix A--14) .
CES collected all samples , bOTh water and soil , using standard
EPA approved methods , chain-of-custody documentation, sealed,
capped and labled the 2" X 6" brass collection sleeves and placed
them on ice for iransportion to the laboratory. CES follows their
own internal quality assurance and control program, which
includes trip blanks and spiked tests in ' ',e laboratory on about
20% of their daily samples .
The remaining pond cater at the deepest part of the excavation
varied from zero depth to about 3 feet. Water was collected from
the pond and soil samples from__the pit bottom and side walls.
Water samples were analyzed for BT`X and TEH using current EPA
methods 602 and GCFID 3510, as specified by the DHS. No hydrocar-
bons above the detection limit were found (Table C) . .
8
