SEBASTIANI VINEYARDS/
VOODBRIDGE CELLARS
SITE ASSESSMENT
LODI, CALIFORNIA
yEXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This site assessment report has been prepared as a result of fuel
hydrocarbon contamination cf soils and groundwater associated with a
former underground fuel storage tank located at the Sebastiani Vineyards/ f
.., Woodbridge Cellars facility in Lodi, California.
Prior to McLaren Engineering, involvement in this project, the tank was
removed and fuel was observed directly beneath the former location of the
tank. A subsequent excavation of soils down to the groundwater table was
monitored by McLaren Engineering and, based on the occurrence of petroleum
hydrocarbons in soils and groundwater from the excavation pit, a
comprehensive site assessment operation was initiated. The site
assessment included soil sampling, monitor well construction and
groundwater sampling from five soil borings, two soil aeration areas, ten
groundwater monitoring wells, and two site supply wells. Results of the
site assessment indicate that soil contamination extends laterally from
the excavation pit between 15 and 35 feet. Soil contamination begins at
a depth of 7 to 12 feet below ground surface and extends to the shallow
groundwater table at 18 feet below ground surface. Contamination of the
shallow grounde:ater unit at this site extends laterally from the
excavation pit to the southwest a maximum 100 feet. Vertical
contamination of groundwater is contained within the shallow groundwater
: 1 unit which is underlain by a silty clay unit with a minimum thickness of
5 feet.
Site assessment findings indicate that remediation of soils and
_0 groundwater are required. Specific elements of remediation and
implementation of those elements will be presented in the McLaren
Engineering, Final Remedial Plan.
INTRODUCTION
This report presents results of McLaren Engineering's soil and groundwater
investigation at the Sebastiani Vineyardslrloodbridge Cellars facility at
4614 West Turner Road in Lodi, California. The location of the project
'-. site is shown in Figure 1. The investigation was conducted in accordance
with the work plan submitted to Sebastiani Vineyards and the San Joaquin
Local Health District (SJI11D) on April 12, 1989, and the April 20 and May
W 1, 1989, work plan addendums. The work plan presented a program to
characterize the extent of soil and groundwater contamination associated
with-a former u-nrground-fuel_storage-tank--at-the-site,--In-general-the
- - --
- ------------ -- ----------- ----de-
T site assessment work included; 1) completing soil borings and groundwater
monitoring wells; 2) laboratory analysis of soil and groundwater samples;
and 3) preparation of a site assessment report for subrdittal to regulatory
agencies.
1 -
