OCTOSPR dU "s ?
HAZARDOUS WASTE PROGRAM
CORE TEAM TRAINING GUIDE
Note ; A cardboard box can only be used to contain non -corrosive , non -leaking , solid
hazardous waste that is compatible with cardboard .
Label the tote/box with the correct classification label , and fill out the label with the
appropriate information . If using a box , completely close and seal the box with tape ,
making sure there are no holes or gaps . Once the box is sealed , it should not be opened
again .
Used fluorescent tulles
Never put used or broken fluorescent tubes in the trash . Our lighting vendor should be able
to leave empty tube boxes at the store . The vendor should be in every store each month to
install new tubes and pickup used tubes . However, you must be sure that all tube waste is
organized in one accessible place for easy pickup ( near the accumulation area) . Place a
completed tote label on the box . Call Compliance if the tubes are not being picked up on a
regular basis ,
Handling hazardous spills
When hazardous product results in a spill , the items used to clean up the spill must be
included in the hazardous waste bag . If this is not done , an inspector would have to assume
that the items used for clean-up went into the trash or dumpster , which is a serious violation .
1 . Put on disposable gloves .
2 . Pour absorbent over the spill , and let it sit until the spill has been completely absorbed .
3 . Bag and seal the item , absorbent, paper towels , gloves , and any other cleaning supplies
in a hazardous waste bag .
4 . Bag and seal the bag in a second hazardous waste bag .
5 . If the label is missing or unreadable , write the name of the item on the bag using a
permanent marker.
6 . Place the item in the appropriate tote .
7 . Check off the type of waste on the label ( if not already checked) .
".SAVE MART SUPERMARKETS 9
INTENDED FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
i
