Each truckload hauled approximately 18 cubic yards of
soil. Each load was secured with a tarp and documented by the Sacramento
Equipment Maintenance site manager.
3.2 AERATION OF SOIL
Aeration of the soil was conducted from October 21, 1987 to March 30,
1988, in accordance with RWQCB and APC:D guidelines. An average TPH
concentration of 372 mg/kg was calculated for the contaminated soil. This
average TPH concentration fell into the APCs organic content category of
100 to 500 mg/kg, allowing a 120 cubic yard per date rate of controlled
aeration (Appendix B, APCD Guidelines) . The contaminated soil was aerated
in four separate 120 cubic yard sections until the TPH concentrations were
below the RWQCB specified level of 300 mg/kg.
The aeration of the fourth soil pile was delayed and completed after the
187/188 winter months.
Each pile to be aerated was uncovered and spread out into a continuous 6-
to 12-inch-thick layer. The soil was tilled at least twice a day for
approximately two weeks. Once the TPH concentration was below the
required 300 mg/kg level., the soil was prepared for landfill disposal
pending confirmatory laboratory results and soil screening.
104-88-681 3
