KLEINFELDER
3.3 SOIL SCREENING AND CONFIRMATION SOIL SAMPLING
After the soil was aerated a minimum of two weeks, a field survey was
conducted on the aerating soil with a portable organic vapor detector. A
flame ionization detector (FID) was used to measure total ionization
tco pounds in parts per million by volume (ppw) relative to a select
standard. A 90 part per million methane calibration gas was used as the
' standard for relative =parison of the field readings. The FID provides
a qualitative indication of contamination. If high FID readings were
, ( recorded, aeration was continued, and the soil pile re-sampled at a later
date. Once relatively low or no FID readings were recorded from the
[ aerating soil, a confirmation soil sample was collected from the point
with the highest FID read?. if no FID readings were recorded, a random
confirmation sample was collected. Plates 2 through 5 (see Appendix C)
show the FID survey and confirmation sample locations for each aeration
pile. Each confirmation soil sample was submitted under chain-of-custody
F.
to [hmvest Analytical Laboratories and analyzed for TPH by =/GC-FID.
Laboratory data sheets and chain-of-custody forms for each of the four
confim ation soil sanples are included in Appendix D. Table 1 presents
i
the analytical results for each aeration pile.
'`- 3.4 SOIL DISPOSAL
't Fdn7QCB required that soil must have a TPH oonoentration below 300mg/kg for
landfill disposal. Soil with a TPH between 100 and 300 mg/kg should be
disposed to the landfill as i.ntenate cover. Soil with a TPH
concentration below 100 mg/kg can be used as daily cover or disposed
IL
directly into the landfill. Based on the analytical results of the
confirmation soil samples, three of the four piles (130 to 300 ppm) can be
' used as intermediate cover and the remaining pile (97 ppm) can be disposed
directly to the landfill.
IL
16
I * 104-88-681 4
IL
