Farmington Groundwater Recharge Program STC Work Plan—Hammer Site
2. METHODOLOGY
This section describes methods to be followed by program participants during implementation of
field investigation activities. Initial field reconnaissance has begun at the site and methodology
will be described in this section for the following tasks:
• Drilling;
• Borehole percolation testing;
• Monitoring well construction;
• Source and groundwater sampling; and
• Recharge testing.
2.1. Initial Field Reconnaissance
The objective of the initial field reconnaissance stage is to obtain environmental clearance at the
site and prepare for the first field data collection stage to ultimately obtain quantitative site
recharge performance data. An initial landowner meeting and site inspection was the first task
conducted as part of the initial field reconnaissance stage. This initial landowner meeting and site
inspection was conducted to assess landowner willingness to participate in the program, to
evaluate general site feasibility, and to identify the presence of any "Fatal Flaws" at or near the
site. Results from this landowner meeting and site inspection determined the adequacy of the
site for the purposes of conducting field investigation activities. This meeting and inspection
however, did not provide quantitative recharge performance data. A record of this initial
landowner meeting and site investigations is documented in "Initial Field Record (Landowner
Meeting—Hammer Site), April 20, 2004" (MWH, 2004).
As part of the above-mentioned landowner meeting and provided in the Initial Field Record
were, initial field observations including preliminary identification of potential soil or water
quality concerns, analysis of surficial soil deposits and geologic features, observation of current
and historical groundwater elevation data, potential water sources and conveyance structures,
historical land use, accessibility and existing structures, and utilities and underground
improvements were conducted.
To augment this information, the next tasks under the initial field reconnaissance stage are
included in the following sections.
2.1.1. Conduct Environmental Site Assessment
An environmental site assessment (ESA) will be conducted at the site to determine if any
environmental conditions exist at the site which would be affected during field investigation
activities. The ESA includes an evaluation of historical aerial photos, regulatory database
review, environmental permitting, and regional existing well completion data. The ESA
document will assist in determining if the site or any adjacent properties within the vicinity of the
site pose a"recognized environmental condition"(REC).
MWH 2-1 July 2004
