Farmington Groundwater Recharge Program STC Work Plan—Hammer Site
2.5.4. Pond Height
A staff gauge will be installed at the site to monitor the depth of ponded water. Regulation of
inflows and outflows will be based on staff gauge readings in order to maintain a constant head.
If flooded field ground water recharge technique is implemented, water depth will be maintained
between 0.5 and 1.5 feet. If an excavated pit recharge technique is implemented, water depth
will be maintained between 1.0 and 5.0 feet. To achieve that depth, manual readings from staff
gauges will be recorded according to the schedule in Appendix D and on the forms provided in
Appendix G and changes in inflow and outflow will be made if necessary.
2.5.5. Inflow Rate
Inflow rates necessary for pilot recharge testing will be estimated after analysis of data from the
first data collection stage. Calculations will assume that the site is supplied by a constant flow
rate for 24 hours a day and that pond height must be maintained at the specified height. Careful
records of inflow and outflow rates, collected according to the schedule in Appendix D, will be
kept to help determine final infiltration rates.
A water balance will be used to derive the infiltration rate during direct pilot recharge testing.
I = {[(V2-V 1)/A]—(S2-S1) +P—E}/T
Where:
I = Infiltration rate(feet/day)
V2 =Current flow volume reading(ft)
V 1 =Previous flow volume reading (ft)
A=Area of pilot test site in square feet(ft)
S2 =Current depth of water in test site (feet)
S 1 =Previous depth of water in test site(feet)
P= Precipitation(feet)
E=Evaporation(feet)
T=Time (days)
2.5.6. Site Maintenance and Monitoring
Equipment
MWH and SEWD will monitor and maintain all equipment at the site. This includes the water
conveyance pipeline, flow regulation device, water volume meter (automated dataloggers), and
any safety features such as fencing that may be needed at the site. Potential problems may affect
performance, such as berm erosion, turbid water, and algae formation. MWH will assist SEWD
with the monitoring and data collection process during pilot recharge testing.
MWH 2-15 July 2004
