INFORMATION SHEET
QUALITY ASSURED PACKING, INC.
STOCKTON TERMINAL
EASTERN RAILROAD OF NEVADA CORP.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
Quality Assured Packing, Inc. (QAP) has operated a cannery at 2851 N. Bozzano
Road, northeast of Stockton in San Joaquin County, since 1985. The cannery
processes apricots in June and tomatoes for a 90-day season from July to October.
Wastewater generated from the operation is applied to 78 acres of fields under
the control of QAP, and 90 acres of farmland owned and farmed by Lino Bozzano.
Odor complaints have been received every year of plant operation, although fewer
are received each year. Discharge volume is up to 0. 125 million gallons per day
(mgd) during the apricot season in June and 0.45 mgd during the tomato season,
July-October.
QAP has requested an extension of the discharge season to year-round. QAP
proposes to discharge up to 1 mgd in June for apricot or tomato canning, 1.5 mgd
July through September for tomato canning, 0.75 mgd in October, and 0.075 mgd
November through May for sauce operations. According to 1989 monitoring reports
submitted by the Discharger, the average BOD of the apricot discharge was 370
mg/l , the average BOD of the tomato discharge was 728 mg/l , the average total
suspended solids concentration of the apricot discharge was 155 mg/l , and the
average total suspended solids concentration of the tomato discharge was 522
mg/l . Effluent data from tomato sauce test runs, proposed November through May,
included BOD of 706 mg/l and total suspended solids of 243 mg/l .
Process wastewater, 45f total wastewater, is treated in a dissolved air
flotation (DAF) unitior to disposal . The capacity of the DAF unit is 0.44
Imgd. A second DAF unit will be installed when total wastewater flow approaches
0.97 mgd, tertati elt planned f installation prior to the 1992 season.
The tot acres available for irrigation is approximately 450 acres. QAP and
several farmers propose to irrigate (Wastewater Reclamation Requirements Order
No. ) walnut and cherry orchards, sugar beets, tomatoes, kidney beans, and
pasture grass by sprinkler irrigation with process wastewater from QAP blended
with fresh water from existing wells. Field 0 will be flood-irrigated instead
of sprinkler-irrigated. In winter months, wastewater will irrigate the orchards
and pasture grass. Fields 1 , 2, and 3 will be irrigated only in summer when
needed, and at night when possible, per residents' requests. There is a lined,
aerated 0.455 mg emergency storage pond available if wastewater cannot be applied
to fields during a rainy season. If the pond becomes full , and fields cannot be
used, all wastewater generating operations will cease until land application can
be resumed.
TLL
