Appendix A
Where field conditions require the use of a backhoe for sample collection, samples will be collected as
soon aspossible once the bucket of soil has been lifted to the surface. Field sawn lers will wear disposal
gloves, which will be replaced after each sample is taken to avoid cross conta ation. The first sample
collected from the backhoe bucket will be for VOC analyses(where applicable) by EPA Method 5035
using Encor6m samplers. The procedure for collecting soil samples by EPA 5035 is:
• Remove Encorer' sampling device and cap from resealable package and attach T-handle to sampler
body
• Quickly push the sampler into the freshly exposed soil surface in the backk oe bucket
• Cap the sampler with a twisting motion
• Record sample information as described in Section 4.5
• Place sample in resealable container
• Repeat above procedure to obtain 3 filled EncoreTM samplers per sample
• Place Encorerm samples in bag provided and label bag using permanent ir k and record on COC form
and field notebook
• Store in cooler at 4:h 2 degrees Celsius(°C).
A second sample will be collected for all non VOC samples using a stainless steel tube(sleeve)
measuring two inches in diameter and six inches long. The sleeve will be inserted into the center of the
bucket. The filled sleeve will be removed from the bucket, wrapped both end with Teflon and then
sealed with end caps. These samples will be also be stored upon collection at 4 f 2°C.
A1.2.2.2 Surface and Shallow Soil Sampling
Surface soil samples will be collected using a hand-operated stainless steel drive sampler capable of
retrieving undisturbed soil samples. Surface debris will be cleared prior to sampling. The drive sampler
will be pressed into the soil at an angle of 45 to 90 degrees until the 6-inch length of the sample tube is
filled with soil. Samples for VOC analyses will be collected by inserting an Encor6m sampler into soil as
described in section A1.2.2.I. If the soil is extremely coarse-grained(e.g.,l ge gravel)such that the
clasts are larger than the diameter of the Encor6m samplers, tubes of soil wil I be submitted in lieu of the
Encore'm sampler, and recorded in the daily field logbook and the Chain of Custody. After the surface
soil sample has been collected, the hole will be backfilled with native soil.
A1.2.2.3 Trenching Subsurface Sampling
Subsurface soil samples from test pits will be collected by driving 6-inch length stainless steel tubes
directly into the side wall of the test pit,or by using a hand operated stainless steel core sampler capable
of retrieving undisturbed soil samples, or from the backhoe bucket. The surface of the soil in the backhoe
m
bucket will be scraped away prior to driving the hand-driven sample tube o the soil in the bucket. The
sample will then be removed and placed into an appropriate sample container. Samples for VOC analyses
will be collected by inserting an Encor6m sampler into the soil as described in section A1.2.2.1. If the
soil is extremely coarse-grained(e.g.,large gravel) such that the clasts are I rger than the diameter of the
Encor6m samplers, tubes of soil will be submitted in lieu of the EncoreTm si mpler, and recorded in the
daily field logbook and the Chain of Custody.
KB61125 APPENDIX A MACTEC Engineering and Cons (ting, Inc.
