41
• Appendix A
• The SUMMA canister sample will then be stored away from excessive he t or cold pending shipment
to the fixed laboratory under chain of custody protocol in accordance with the protocols in Section
A1.5.
A1.2.5.3.2 Formaldehyde by EPA TO-11
A low flow pump(e.g. SKC AirCheck PCX), low flow adjustable needle valy , flow meter(e.g.BIOS
DryCal Lite),and"T-valve"will be attached to the end of the sampling line. rhe"T-valve"will be
positioned on the line before the flow meter and the pump. The sorbent tube N 611 be introduced in line
between the"tee"valve and the pump and an additional volume of 1-15 liters of air will be allowed to
pass from the sampling line through the sorbent tube. Flow rates before and after sample collection will
be measured and recorded as well as the elapsed time of sampling.
A1.2.5.4 Temporary Probe Abandonment
Following sample collection, the temporary soil vapor probe will be removed ing the direct push drill
rig and the borehole will be backfilled with hydrated bentonite. Surface rest o tion will consist of
manually patching the probe hole with soil, asphalt,or concrete to match exisi ing conditions. A stake
will be driven and labeled with the sample ID at each abandoned soil vapor pi obe location. The probe
rods and screened sampling tip will be decontaminated prior to use at another sampling location.
A1.3 Quality Control (QC) Samples
Field QC samples will be generated to evaluate the precision, accuracy, and integrity of field sampling
and laboratory analytical procedures. QC samples are represented by control samples introduced into the
sample analysis stream. Field QC sample frequency is based on the total nun her of samples submitted,
and the type and frequency of the investigative process that is being monitore i. The following QC
samples will be employed during the field program.
A1.3.1 Trip Blanks
Trip blank samples are used to monitor for possible contamination of VOCs i ri samples due to original
contamination in laboratory supplied media,or field induced contamination& m sample collection,
handling,or shipping techniques.
Trip blanks samples for EPA Method 8260B are prepared by the laboratory u sing contaminant free water
(e.g.,nitrogen purged deionized water)which is poured into VOA vials and shipped by the laboratory
along with sample containers for VOC analysis. Trip blanks will accompany sample containers into the
field and will be shipped back to the laboratory with every cooler that contai s liquid samples for VOC
analyses. Trip blanks will be analyzed for all VOC analytes specified for sat iples in the corresponding
cooler.
Trip blank samples for soil vapor samples will consist of laboratory supplied media(SUMMA for EPA
Method TO-15 and sorbent tube for EPA Method TO-11)that will travel wit the samples, and will be
submitted with the samples for analysis, but will not be exposed for sample llection. One trip blank
sample per matrix will accompany each shipment of soil vapor samples
A1.3.2 Field Duplicate Samples
Field duplicate samples are submitted to the contract laboratory for the purpose of assessing the precision
of the field sample collection and laboratory analysis techniques. The labon tory will not be informed of
KB61125 APPENDIX A MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc. A7
September 28,2005
