29 January 2002
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
' 2.3. SEPTIC TANKS
' A total of 6 septic tanks have been identified on the subject property, of hich only two are currently
active. The active septic systems are located on the north and east portio a of the property(Figures 3
and 4), one east of the existing maintenance building, the other west of le Millwork Building. The
' inactive septic tanks are on the south portion of the site (Figure 3), one east of the former Cover
Plant, one east of the former Finger Joints/Box Factory Building, onesouth of the former Nurse's
Station, and one west of the former Maintenance Building near the form 10,000-gallon diesel UST.
The inactive septic tanks east of the Cover Plant and Finger Joints/Box Factory Buildings are still
in place, the inactive tank south of the former Nurse's Station is caved in and partially filled with
debris. The inactive tank west of the former Maintenance Building is belived to have been removed
' concurrently with removal of the building and excavation of diesel-impacted soil. The locations of
the septic tanks are shown on Figure 3.
2.3.1. Finger Joints Building Septic Leach Field- Inactive
D&M, in their Phase 11 Investigation, American Molding(sic) and MillKvrk, Stockton, California
dated 25 February 1987, identified the septic tank northeast of the Finger Joints building as being
a possible receptor of hazardous materials and proposed sampling soil and ground water for analysis
' for total phenols, formaldehyde, total hydrocarbons, lead, zinc and chro i=. Apparently the work
was scheduled for 05 May 1987. Kleinfelder proposed in their June 1987 work plan to sample the
' leach field associated with the septic tank for the same analytes excpt substituting PCP/TCP
analysis for total phenols. AGE has no copies of reports or any other dirc ct references to the results
of either sampling plan.
' During the December 2000 site assessment activities, AGE collected s it and grab groundwater
samples from the septic leach field east of the Finger Joint Building/Box Factory (Figure 3, sample
' WLB1). Soil and ground water samples analyzed did not contain detectib concentrations ofTRPH,
formaldehyde, TCP, TCE and PCE. Soil samples contained chromium, lead and zinc at
concentrations considered to be background. The ground water swriple contained elevated
concentrations of metals. The sample was not filtered prior to analysis, so the metals results include
total metals from entrained mineral grains and are not represent five of dissolved metals
concentrations.
2.3.2. Millwork Building Septic Leach Field- Active
Kleinfelder sampled soil in the leach field of the septic system west ol,the Millwork Building in
' 1987 (Kleinfelder, 1992). Kleinfelder reported that the leach field may have received paint or urea
formaldehyde glue rinse water and that the materials were not discharget i to the system after 1986.
Advmiced GeoEnvitonmentel,Ine.
