29 January 2002
' AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
Page 11 of 25
2.6. BURN PITS AND FORMER TEEPEE STRUCTURE IRNN4C I RATOR
Waste wood and trash were disposed on-site in two open burn pits wt st of the storm water pond
' from the 1960s to the late 1970s, and in a metal teepee incinerator sou th of the former cover plant
building and north of the former box factory building on the west side of the railroad track traversing
the property. The bum pits were backfilled circa 1984 and were subs quently re-excavated circa
1994. Soil excavated from the burn pits and former teepee area is stockpiled on the site north and
east of the northern bum pit.
' 2.6.1. Bum Pits and Former Teepee Area Assessment Status
' Laboratory analysis of soil samples collected from the burn pits teepee structure area by
Kleinfelder revealed localized elevated concentrations of metals (copper, lead and zinc) compared
' to background concentrations,and low concentrations ofchlorinatedhy ocarbons(DCMA,PCE and
TCE). The concentrations encountered,while locally elevated for some analytes,have generally been
below levels of environmental concern. Locations of the burnpits and teepee structure are shown on
NFigure 2.
With the exception of soil sample 63599 (a soil sample from the fill in tl e north pit) among samples
' collected in 1992, metals concentrations ranged as follows:
• Nickel-<10 milligrams per kilogram(mg/kg) to 30 mg/kg;
' • Copper - 29 to 220 mg/kg;
• Lead- <5 to 180 mg/kg;
' Zinc - 50 to 2,200 mg/kg;
• Arsenic - 6 to 11 mg/kg (teepee area); and
tChromium-30 to 65 mg/kg (burn pits)
Sample 63599, collected at 10 feet below surface grade (bsg) in thl north burn pit, contained
30 mg/kg nickel, 11,000 mg/kg copper, 1,500 mg/kg lead,400 mg/kg zidc,and 65 mg/kg chromium
Among the 1992 soil samples analyzed, only the lead concentration in sample 63599 and the arsenic
' concentrations in the teepee area exceeded the PRGs for industrial soil issued by Region 9 of the US
EPA. Table 2 shows the Title 22 Total Threshold Limit Concentration TTLC), Soluble Threshold
Limit Concentration(STLC),the Maximum Contaminant Level(MCL) or drinking water, and EPA
Region 9's PRGs for industrial and residential soil.
In addition to metals, sample 63599, collected in the backfill in the no here pit in 1992, contained
6 gg/kg dichloromethane(DCMA), 8 µg/kg trichloroethene(TCE), and 27 µg/kg tetrachloroethene
Advanced GeoEnvironnrental,Inc.
1
