' 11 September 2001
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
(blow counts). The blow counts will be recorded on boring logs. Upon soil sample retrieval, the
' middle brass sleeve (or other selected sleeve) will be removed from the sampler. The ends of the
selected brass sleeve will be immediately covered with Teflon or al num sheets, sealed with
' plastic end caps, secured with tape and immediately placed in a chilled container for transportation
under chain of custody to a state-certified laboratory. Each sample sleeve will be labeled with the
boring location, sample depth, sample time, sampling date and sampler's initials. The preserved
samples will be stored in a chilled container pending shipment to a DHS-approved analytical
laboratory under chain of custody.
' Duplicate samples will be monitored for the presence of organic vapor using a photo-ionization
detector(PID:Thermo Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV,calibrated to isobiltylene)and will be visually
described on boring logs using the Unified Soil Classification System USCS).
' All sampling tools and brass sleeves used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean
water after washing with a solution of Alconox. All hollow stem augers will be steam-cleaned prior
' to advancement of each borehole.
' 4.3.2. Stockpile Soil Sample Collection
' Discrete soil samples will be collected from soil stockpiles by digging approximately one foot into
the soil stockpile and collecting a soil sample in a 2-inch by 6-inch metal sleeve by pressing the
sampling sleeve into the soil by hand or using a metric sampler with a i hive hammer.
' Soil samples will be collected from the stockpile at a minimum frequenc i of one discrete soil sample
for every 100 cubic yards of soil.Approximately 2,000 cubic yards of coi itaminated soil is contained
' in the stockpiles requiring a minimum of 20 soil stockpile samples to )e submitted for laboratory
analysis. It is anticipated that 10 soil samples will be collected from soil piles generated during
excavation of the north bum pits, 6 soil samples from soil piles generated during excavation of the
south burn pits and 4 soil samples from soil piles generated during excavation of the former teepee
structure. The collected soil sleeve will be preserved and labeled as described in 4.3.1 above, but
with a unique sampling locality designation. The preserved samples will be stored in a chilled
container pending shipment to a DHS-approved analytical laboratory der chain of custody.
' 4.4. COLLECTION OF GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLES
Grab ground water samples will be collected from each boring from the first ground water
encountered in the borings to analyze for potential contaminants of co cern for the area. The zone
of first ground water will be inferred from depths to water in the existing monitoring wells on the
' south portion of the site (if granted access from the responsible party) and from collection of
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
1
