II. Monitoring Well Initial Inspection, Locations and Conditions
Four monitoring wells are located on Parcels I, II and III at the Delta Bulk
Terminals Facility. A site reconnaissance and a magnetometer survey were
performed on April 9, 2003 to locate the four monitoring wells and access the
current condition of each well. As indicated in the background section, Dames
and Moore installed the wells in 1991 under well installation permits issued by
the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (EHD) (see
Reference). Well logs and details were not available but all appeared to be
either Sch. 40 PVC cased 2-inch diameter, or Sch 80 PVC cased 4-inch diameter
25-foot deep wells. When the monitoring wells were uncovered and repaired on
April 25, 2003, all the casings were found to be 4-inch diameter well casings.
The April 9, 2003 site reconnaissance with Global Positioning System (GPS)
monitoring well location coordinates is summarized below.
11.1. Monitoring Well MW-1 (GPS N 37 56.879; W 121 19.968)
• This monitoring well is located on Parcel III just north of the railroad tracks
about 16 feet north of a telephone pole. The well was buried and digging away
the surface fill exposed the concrete collar. The cap appeared to be missing and
the monitoring well casing may be filled with the fill (assumed to be coke residual
mixed with soil). This well was originally installed as the "upgradient" well for
background sampling.
11.2. Monitoring Well MW-2 (GPS N 37 56.719; W 121 19.997)
This monitoring well is located on Parcel I in an area behind the sulfur
storage area and building. The monitoring well concrete collar and lid were in
place and rusted shut and could not be opened. The casing is assumed to be
intact.
11.3. Monitoring Well MW-3 (GPS N 37 56.740; W 121 19.949)
This monitoring well is located in Parcel II adjacent to the storm water
runoff area. The casing is an exposed location with a broken top, and was not
capped at the time of the visit. The casing appears to be Sch 80 PVC and water
• was observed in the casing, estimated to be about 4.0 feet below existing grade.
3
