Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Re: Application for Permit to Construct One Monitor Well South of East Main
Street on Private Property
Dear Mr. Knoll:
The Regional Water Quality Control Board(RWQCB)has been concerned about chromium detected
in groundwater samples from domestic and irrigation wells south of East Main Street. The RWQCB
has also requested that the Marley Cooling Tower Company(Marley)construct a monitor well south
of East Main Street to determine the southeast extent of total dissolved chromium migration in the
Intermediate Zone.
Enclosed, please find one application (completed in triplicate) to construct this monitor well on the
private property of Mr. Jim Solari. The RWQCB contacted Mr. Solari in November 1994 regarding
property access. Dudek personnel contacted Mr. Solari on May 15, 1995 and received verbal
approval to construct a monitor well on the southernmost portion of his property adjacent to the
Mormon Slough.
Well Construction
Once the permit has been issued,an exploratory borehole and monitor well will be constructed along
the north side of the Mormon Slough roughly midway between monitor wells MW-431, on Sinclair
Avenue, and MW-443, on Walker Lane (Figure 1). The exploratory borehole will provide the
information necessary to determine the screened interval for the monitor well. Both the exploratory
borehole and monitor well will be constructed using mud rotary drilling techniques.
The exploratory borehole will be drilled to approximately 250 feet below land surface (bls) and
electrically logged to determine the completion interval. The monitor well will be completed next
to the exploratory borehole location with 4-inch inside diameter PVC pipe. A screened interval of
no more than 20 feet will be used to complete the monitor well,in accordance with prior agreements
between Marley, California Department of Toxic Substances Control, and the RWQCB. The exact
length of screened interval will depend upon field conditions (Figure 2). It is anticipated that the
well will be completed between 140 and 180 feet bls depending upon the occurrence of the most
ro
4a
