The subject report and the response comments were both
prepared by MWH Americas, Inc. and submitted on behalf of SPX Corporation.
The purpose of this workplan is to collect soil samples from beneath the former retort pit to
evaluate if soils are a current or potential source of arsenic, copper, or chromium to groundwater.
Four angle soil borings are proposed to be drilled directly under the retort pit. Five vertical
(conventional) soil borings are proposed to be drilled surrounding the retort pit area. Soil
samples from all borings will be collected at 20, 40, and 60 feet below ground surface to assess
the vertical distribution of total and leachable constituents. Collected soil samples will be
submitted for total and deionized water extractable concentrations of arsenic, copper and
chromium. Following completion of the field and laboratory work, a report will be submitted.
The RWQCB comments on the workplan have been adequately addressed. Please proceed with
implementation of the workplan. We look forward to reviewing the investigation results and
data evaluation.
Sudhakar Talanki, P.E.
Water Resources Control Engineer
cc: Mr. Emmanuel Mensah,DTSC, Sacramento
Mr. Harlin Knoll, San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division, Stockton
Mr. Jeffrey Bold, MWH Americas, Inc., Sacramento
California Environmental Protection Agency
cps Recycled Paper
