STATE OF CALIFORNIA-RESOURCES AGENCY EDMUND G. BROWN JR., GOVERNOR
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD-
CENTRAL VALLEY REGION
3201 S STREET
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA 93816
PHONE (916) 443-0270 '
8 June 1982
Mr. Wayne Struchtmeyer
Vice President, Production
The Marley Cooling Tower Company
5800 Foxridge Drive
Post Office Box 2912
Mission, Kansas 66201
EAST STOCKTON WOOD TREATING FACILITY, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
Thank you for your 20 May 1982 letter to us and the soil and ground water data
attached to it. As we discussed by phone last week, we look forward to meeting
with you next Monday, 14 June, at our office at 8:30 a.m. A map showing the
location of the office is enclosed.
Based on our preliminary review of the data you sent, it appears you have under-
taken a good initial sampling of the site. The results show significant levels
of contamination in the retort pit. Of particular concern are the data showing
levels of chromium in the wells on-site at or near the maximum contaminant level
for drinking water. The information you have already obtained on the soil con-
tamination causes us to revise our suggestions for future sampling. We can
discuss this at our upcoming meeting.
Finally, we have been asked to make a brief presentation to our Board on this
matter on 25 June. We will forward a copy of the staff report when it is com-
pleted. Your cooperation in resolving this problem is greatly appreciated.
STANLEY R.
