San Joaquin County Public Health Services
' Environmental Health Division
November 1, 1994
Page 4
' Drilling Methods
The soil boring will be drilled using a truck mounted drill rig equipped with hollow-stem
augers This drilling method can be performed without the introduction of drilling fluids (which may
mobilize contaminants) and allows for the collection of relatively undisturbed soil samples through
the hollow stem of the auger The boring will be drilled to a depth of approximately 80 feet bgs
I
Soil cuttings produced during drilling will be placed in Department of Transportation (DOT)
approved 55-gallon drums and stored on site Costs for the disposal of the cuttings will be prepared
upon completion of laboratory analyses of the soil samples The soil cuttings will remain the
' responsibility of American Forest Products Company
Soil Sampling Methods
Exploratory borings will be continuously sampled using a 94-mm-diameter by 5-foot-long
core barrel, or other appropriate method Soils will be logged by the Unified Soil Classification
System (USCS) and stored in core trays or boxes for future examination or testing, as necessary
The soil borings will be sampled every five feet and at significant changes in iithology with
an 18-inch driven sampler The driven sampler will be used to collect soil samples from Just below
the asphaltic CAP and then at 5-foot intervals to the total depth of the boring Soils will be logged
' according to the USCS and archived for future examination if necessary
During use, the sampler will be driven 18 inches or until refusal into undisturbed soil The
' sampler will be driven using a 140-pound hammer dropping 30 inches Hammer blows required to
drive the sampler each six-inch increment of the 18-inch interval will be recorded on the boring log
The sampler will then be removed from the auger, and the tip and waste barrel will be removed,
allowing the split barrel (or split spoon) to be separated and sample rings to be removed
SAC128 18 Page-4 DAMES & MooRE
M
