"The organic substances.. are generally artificial. Their occurrence in nature is negligible. <br /> None are essential nutrients to humans or animals. Accordingly,humans and animals <br /> have developed few natural defenses to these substances. Most are much more . <br /> bioaccumulative and more toxic than the inorganic substances..."3 <br /> The "persistent and bioaccumulative toxic substances" for which TTLCs were derived fall <br /> into several chemical classes, including heavy metals (e.g., arsenic and mercury), <br /> organometallics (lead compounds,organic) base/neutral extractable compounds (e.g., <br /> chlordane,lindane and toxaphene), acid extractable compounds (pentachlorophenol), <br /> phenoxy acids (2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid)„ and volatile organic compounds <br /> (trichloroethylene). Most of the waste constituents that have the potential to degrade water <br /> quality(and will, therefore,be considered in the classification of wastes) fall into one or <br /> more of these chemical classes. For this reason,it is recommended that the "generic" 10- <br /> fold leachability factor for organics and 100-fold leachability factor for inorganics be used <br /> in situations where information on the leachable constituent fraction is unavailable. <br /> 3 <br /> c <br /> The Total Designated Level for a constituent of a solid waste may be calculated by <br /> multiplying the Soluble Designated Level by the leachability factor. However,since the <br /> Total Designated Level is to be expressed in units of milligrams of constituent per kilogram <br /> of waste(mg/kg), the Soluble Designated Level from which it is calculated must also be <br /> expressed in these units.
