05/10/95 09 39 FAX 916 387 0802 DAMES & MOORE IIO02
r
A
P
P
To further characterize the cherflical nature of contaminants present in the 1 E
N
Soil. and evaluate whether the soil proposed far ewcav*tioa and ou-site
treatAciat would be classified as a bazardons waste under Titlo 23 of the I
California Administrative Code, one representative soil samplo from each side
r
Of the maxatenance shop was obtained for further testing. A sample from k A
beneath the former 10,000-gallon tank (west side) was collected by Dimes & ,
Moore personnel on January 17, 1990. This sample was submitted to hCCULAS
Snvi,ro=enLal Services of Petaluma, California for analysis of Total Petroleum
I
Hydrocarbons (TPS) as diesel (EPA Kethod 255918015, modified). 17 CAM metals
(HFA Methods 6010 and 7000 series), and flashpoint (Bea Method 1010). in
addition. a dupliagt.e of this sample ..as also submitted to HNSSUO Cal Labs of
Ventura, Califoxmda for a 96-hour CCR Bioassay test (Title 22 CCH, Section
66696). A representative sample from the beneath the former waste all/waste
solvent tt=X on the east side of the shop was collected by Dames & Moore
Personnel on March 23, 1990. Because sof the potential for the presenr'e of 4
waste oil and/or solvents, this sample was analyzed by ACCUL,AB for total
F
recoverable hydrocarbons (SPA Method 418.1), caamium, chromium. lead, zinc and F
halogenated volatile organics (EPA Nothod 8010), in addition to tPH as dierel, E
A
E
• The results of the supplemental testing are mu:nmarIzed on Table 1 sad
complete laboratory reports are included in Appexxdin A. Comparable ?
concentrations ofd' TPH and %= (6,000 ppm vs. 7,200 ppm) measured in a soil.
32myla collected on the east side of the shop suggests that the hydrocarbons
present in the soil are indicative of diesel fual and not higher boiling poliat
hydrocarbons typically associated with waste oa,ls. Several metals were
detected above the method detection limit in both samples; however, [
conCentratioDs of metals detected were all well below the desiSnated Total
Tbreshold Limit C*Acentratxona (TTLC) and ten times the Soluble Threshold '
Limit Concentrations (STLC)_ The low cozoentratious of metals present in the
soil samples is likely characteriatic of background conditions, and supports
the conclusion that waste oils are not present in soils underlying the east
end of the shop. No halogenated volatile organic compounds (solvents) -were
detected above the method detection limItf in the sample collected from the
/G xn .Y .... rf 6d•r8 d,r lG.;c-,r.
BS/0458d
