FORMER AMERICAN FOREST PRODUCTS FACILITY Section No.2.0
Additional 1,2-DCA Investigation and Site Conceptual Model February 2005
And Second Quarter 2004 Quarterly Monitoring Report Page 2-2
2.2.1. Groundwater Monitoring Field Methods
Static water levels (Table 2) were measured prior to initiating sampling activities using an electric water-
level sounder.
Prior to sampling, the wells were purged to ensure representativeness of the water samples. A 2-inch-
diameter Grundfos submersible pump was used for purging all of the wells with the exception of
1 DMW-6, which was purged using a bailer.Purge rates ranged from 1 to 4 gallons per minute(gpm).Field
parameters (temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, and turbidity) were monitored during purging, and
purging was continued until the field parameters stabilized and a minimum of three casing volumes of
groundwater had been removed. Purging data were entered on Field Record of Water Sampling Forms
iw (Appendix B). Before and after purging each well, the submersible pump was decontaminated by steam
cleaning, washing in an Alconox solution, rinsing with fresh water, and final rinsing with distilled water.
,• Purge and rinsate water were placed into a Baker tank located at the site. The wastewater was removed
and disposed of by ABCO Environmental and manifested as non-hazardous waste based on-site analytical
t data.
Laboratory supplied sample containers and trip blanks were obtained from Severn Trent Laboratories
(STL), Inc., Sacramento, California, prior to the sampling events. STL is certified by the California
Department of Health Services, Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (DHS-ELAP). Follow-
ing purging, samples were collected from each well using disposable bailers, and transferred to the
appropriate laboratory-supplied sample containers through an attachment that allows a controlled flow
1 from the bailer. Sample containers were then labeled and placed into an iced cooler for shipment to the
analytical laboratory via overnight carrier. A completed chain-of-custody document (copies of which are
r
included in Appendix A) accompanied each sample shipment.
2.2.2 Laboratory Analysis and Data Validation
"i The groundwater samples were submitted for analysis according to the following methods:
L
Wells I Analysis Method
t DMW-1 through DMW-9 TPH-D Method 8015M
Chlorinated VOCs and oxygenates EPA Method 8260B
EPA = United States Environmental Protection Agency
TPH-D = total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel
VOC = volatile organic compound
A field duplicate was collected at DMW-7. A trip blank included with the sample shipment was analyzed
for chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by United States Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) Method 826013. STL, Inc., also performed routine laboratory quality assurance/quality control
(QAIQC) analyses, including method blanks and surrogate analyses. Laboratory analytical reports for the
groundwater samples and the associated QA/QC samples are included in Appendix C.
{ Data validation was performed by URS,consisting of a review of:
~ Data completeness,
KAWprocess1227361Arnerican Forest\Well Installation ltepon revOl.doc
!rte
