Mr. Arnold Hof -4 - 30 April 2003
Remediation
In our 2 April telephone conversation, you stated that your remediation program of taking up
nitrogen from groundwater by safflower continues. The monitoring reports should include more
information on the status of your remediation program, including the season and year that you
initiated the plantings, whether supplemental water is seasonally applied, and a figure depicting
where the remediation is taking place.
In our October 2001 meeting,you agreed to plant trees to remediate the benzene hexachloride
that is detected in MW-3 on the western side of your property. In our 2 April phone
conversation, you stated that these trees have not yet been planted since it was not clear where
the legal property boundary was. You stated that you surveyed the property boundaries this year
and you intend to plant the trees in May.
Summary
Thank you for conducting the monitoring and reporting and implementing crop uptake
remediation as you agreed in our October 2001 meeting. The nitrate concentrations on the site
are nearing the cleanup levels, and petroleum constituents are continuing to decline. However,
concentrations of b-BHC in MW-3 have not changed substantially over the period of record, and
we hope that phytoremediation will rectify that. However, the trees need to be planted before any
improvement is expected.
We look forward to seeing you install the replacement monitoring well for MW-6 and plant the
trees as you agreed to in our October 2001 meeting.
By 23 May 2003, please provide the following:
• a schedule to deliver a work plan to install a replacement monitoring well;
• a schedule to abandon monitoring wells MW-8 and MW-9;
• comments on the draft MRP; and
• a letter and diagram showing where the trees were planted, what species were planted,how
many,whe planting took place, and how water will be initially delivered to the trees.
If u have y quest' ns, you may contact me at(916) 255-3080.
to
yy
TERRELL
Private Sites Cleanup Unit
Enclosure
cc: Mr. Michael Infurna, San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department, Stockton
Mr. David Smith, HydroGeologic Inc., Sacramento
