LSECTION 5:SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS
L • Develop Cage Management Strategy. Over the long term, trees are expected to outgrow
the cages, and bark will grow into the wire mesh and rebar, damaging and ultimately
Lkilling the tree. Beavers will likely continue to browse the trees as long as the site and
trees are accessible. Therefore,it is recommended that a cage management strategy be
developed. One possible option is to prune the lower branches"up" as the tree grows,
1 so that the lower branches do not grow into the cage. In addition, the wire mesh could
i also be pulled out away from the trunk, and enlarged, to increase the diameter of the
cage.In Year 3 (2009),some branches were pruned, and cages were opened up and
pulled away from the trunk. It is recommended that limited pruning be conducted in
Year 5 (2011).The diameter of tree cages should be increased in Year 5 (2011) in any
L locations where the trees are outgrowing the cages and the bark is rubbing against the
cage material.
L
L
i
L
L
L
1
L
4
L
L
LSAG166749/10350DD01(YEAR4-2010_HOLTTREE_MONITORING REPORT-FINALDOCX) 5-3
