r
i
• Estimates of the amount of hydrocarbon to be removed suggest that the majority of the mass is
present in adsorbed phase within the soil Experience shows that vapor extraction is extremely
effective in removing hydrocarbon in this condition Because the mass calculations indicate a
substantial amount of hydrocarbon may be present in the soil, and the results of field testing
indicate the initial production rates are high, a catalytic or thermal oxidizer is recommended
The specific equipment should consist of a 200 scfin size catalytic burner that operates with
natural gas as an auxiliary fuel source Prior to operation of this equipment, a permit will be
obtained from the local Air Quality Management District This permit generally takes 3-6
months to obtain
Groundwater Treatment System
Remediation of the saturated zone will be accomplished by groundwater pumping and
treatment in conjunction with simultaneous vapor extraction The primary benefit of
groundwater pumping is to control the migration of the dissolved fraction of the
contanrunation When combined with simultaneous vapor extraction, this method provides an
effective means of removing hydrocarbon from the groundwater The groundwater pumping
system will utilize 4 recovery wells to affect treatment Recovery wells TB7 and TBS, and
monitoring wells MW3R and MW6 will be equipped with pneumatic pumps operated by a
central system located in the treatment compound The water will be treated using liquid phase
activated carbon and will be discharged to the storm sewer system This will require
application for an NPDES permit which can take 6-12 months for processing
i
Page 10
