Subsurface Conditions
Five borings were advanced at the locations shown on Figures 1 and 2. One boring, B-5
was not drilled due to proximity of overhead electrical power lines. The surface of the
parcel 5 was covered with asphalt pavements and Parcel 6 with hard packed gravel. Soils
underlying pavements consisted of artificial fill and native clayey silts, sandy silts and silty
clay to depths of about 5-feet. Areas of artificial fill occurred near the former battery
storage area, and in the vicinity of the ground penetrating radar anomalies at HA-4 and HA-
5. Hand augering and excavation of HA-4 and HA-5 revealed fill consisting of concrete
rubble with rebar, broken pavement and fill sand.
Clayey silt containing sandy silt and silty sand strata occurred below the fill and generally
below depths of about 5-feet. The silt contained caliche and was massive to crudely
bedded. Boring B-2 revealed petroleum contaminated soil from depths of approximately
10- to 20-feet. The most heavily contaminated zone appeared to be localized at 15-feet.
These contaminants were not observed in nearby Borings B-3 and B-4. Field soil pH
measurements at B-2 and B-3 revealed a soil of pH 6 at depths of 5- to 10-feet.
Groundwater was not encountered in any borehole.
Chemical and Physical Analytical Methods
Selected soil samples from the parcels were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons
(TPH) as gasoline and diesel (TPHG, TPHD) using EPA Method 8015M,Benzene,
Toluene, Ethylbenzene and total Xylenes using EPA Method 8020, for volatile and semi-
volatile organics using EPA Method 8240 and 8270 and CAM 17 Metals. The results are
presented in Tables 1 and 2 below and the analytical reports are attached. A single soil
samples will be collected and tested for R-value using Cal-Trans Test 301, and the results
of that testing are attached.
Table 1.
