EXECUTIVE SUMMARY '
U.S. Technical Environmental Consulting, Inc. (USTEC) has prepared this Contamination
Assessment Report (CAR) for the abandoned Coca-Cola Enterprises - West distribution center
located at 1100 North Wilson Way, Stockton, California. This investigation was initiated by
Mr.Steven McConnell,Director of Occupational/Environmental Safety for Coca-Cole Enterprises
-West(CCE-W),to assess the vertical and lateral extent of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination
found at the site during underground storage tank (UST) removal operations.
}
The excavation and removal of a 10,000-gallon .UST and a 1,000-gallon gasoline.UST.was
completed on April 19, 1990.' The analytical chemistry results of soil samples collected beneath
the former USTs indicated concentrations of diesel and gasoline hydrocarbons were present in '
the soils from the 1,000-gallon gasoline excavation, The release was reported to Mr. Charles s
Hunt of the San Joaquin County Public Health Services,Environmental Health Division on April
19, 1990.
The initial Geld assessment consisted of a soil gas survey which was conducted by USTEC in
May, 1990. The survey was designed to provide initial estimates of the lateral extent of
sin contamination and provide a basis for selecting groundwater monitoring well Iocations. The
assessment continued in August, 1990 with the drilling and installation of six borings and three
groundwater monitoring wells. An additional seven borings were drilled in September, 1990
and two more groundwater monitoring wells were installed.
f
The groundwater .;Monitoring wells were surveyed by a registered California land surveyor.
Groundwater samples were collected from all groundwater monitoring wells. Soil and
groundwater samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in accordance
with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) method 8015 modified for gasoline and diesel,
for the aromatic hydrocarbons,benzene,ethylbenzene,toluene,and xylenes(BTEX)in accordance j
with EPA method 8020, for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNA) in accordance with EPA
method 8100, and for lead in accordance with the California LUST Manual, dated December,
1987. t
{
