APPENDIX E:
DATA USABILITY SUMMARY
INTRODUCTION
SAIC evaluated the analytical data for soil and water samples collected at the US Can—Welty
Road site in Vernalis, California. This data usability summary presents the results of the data
validation process. SAIC collected environmental samples on behalf of Chevron Environmental
Management Company to delineate the lateral and vertical extent of petroleum-affected soil and
water. Soil, groundwater, and water-matrix quality control (QC) samples were collected during
three separate field events: August 11 —August 18, 2008;November 17—November 25, 2008;
and March 3 —March 5, 2009. The total number of samples collected was as follows:
• Fifty-eight soil samples
• Sixteen groundwater samples
• Three groundwater field duplicate samples
• Three groundwater matrix spike/matrix spike duplicate (MS/MSD) samples
• Nine water-matrix trip blank samples
• Six water-matrix equipment rinsate blanks
• Two water-matrix field blank samples
Lancaster Laboratories, Inc. (Lancaster)performed all the analyses on the samples. Lancaster is
certified by the State of California through the Department of Health Services to perform
environmental analyses.
Soil samples were analyzed for the following constituents of potential concern (COPCs):
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX)by United States
Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)Method SW8260B.
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as crude oil (TPHc), carbon range CIO-C36, by
EPA Method SW8015 modified.
• Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by EPA Method SW8270C with selective ion
monitoring.
Groundwater and water-matrix samples were analyzed for one or more of the following COPCs:
• BTEX by EPA Method SW8260B.
• PAHs by EPA Method SW8270C with large-volume injection.
• TPH quantified as diesel (TPHd), carbon range C10-C25, by EPA Method SW8015
modified; a silica gel clean-up procedure based on EPA Method SW3630 was also
performed on samples with TPHd detections to remove non-target biogenic compounds.
• Alkalinity,bicarbonate, and carbonate by Standard Method(SM) 20 2320 B.
• Ammonia nitrogen by SM20 4500NH3 B/C modified.
• Chloride, sulfate, nitrite, and nitrate nitrogen by EPA Method 300.0.
E.1-1
From Science to Snlutiens
