2.0 SITE BACKGROUND <br /> 2.1 Site Description <br /> The site is located at 35500 Welty Road in Vernalis, California, southeast of the <br /> intersection of Welty Road and State Highway 33 (see Figures 1 and 2) The 5 7-acre site is <br /> triangular in shape and is bounded by the Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way and State <br /> Highway 33 to the northeast and Welty Road to the west Several farms are present west of <br /> Welty Road and east of State Highway 33 The Enviropur-West Vernalis oil recycling facility, <br /> other light industrial properties, and additional farms are located south of the property <br /> Presently, the property is a vacant field with interspersed piles of eucalyptus stumps and other <br /> debris <br /> 2.2 Site History <br /> I <br /> The site has had several owners and has been used for a variety of operations in <br /> the past Prior to 1935, the property was owned by Standard Oil of California It was used as a <br /> pump station for operation of the historic Old Valley Pipeline Table 1 provides a summary of <br /> previous land ownership and uses Between 1935 and 1942, the property was owned by A R <br /> Rennie and Meridian Limited In 1936, A R Rennie sold easement rights to Pacific Gas and <br /> Electric Company for a natural gas pipeline along the southern and western portions of the <br /> property In 1947, the property was sold to El Solyo Ranch Company, which established a labor <br /> camp that burned down in 1951 Bus maintenance is reported to have occurred within a large <br /> concrete maintenance pit during the labor camp operation (GTI, 1995) Between 1947 and 1989, <br /> several other property owners used the site for agricultural purposes <br /> i <br /> Preliminary Site Investigation Work Plan-Draft June 30, 1998 <br /> Roberts Property(Former Vemalts Pump Station) <br /> Vemahs,California <br /> 3 <br />
