8.0 EXPOSURE MONITORING PLAN
This exposure monitoring plan describes the air monitoring strategy, the sampling
methods and instrumentation to be used, the methods and frequency of calibration, and the action
levels for the potential work-site hazards Air monitoring data and instrument calibration will be
recorded on appropriate forms (Table 8-1 and Figure 8-1) All monitoring records/forms are
maintained in the project file
8.1 Air Monitoring
The following program is established for ongoing surveillance to detect changes
in the ambient air at 35500 Welty Road, Vernalis to ensure the continuing accuracy of the work
zones and the adequacy of the level of worker protection During field activities, the designated
field team member will monitor the work site Calibration of all monitoring equipment will be
• performed in accordance with the manufacturer's procedures by trained Radian instrument
technicians or authorized personnel The Chevron Pipe Line Company contact will be notified of
any contaminant levels that cause a suspension of site activities
8.1.1 Combustible Gas/Oxygen Level Measurement
Explosive concentrations of air contaminants are not expected to exceed 10% of
the lower explosive limit (LEL), however, during drilling, the designated field team member will
monitor the work area to detect, measure, and document any explosive contaminant
concentrations After each drill increment, explosion-potential, one oxygen-concentration,
measurements will be made b inches above the borehole using a combination combustible
gasloxygen/HZS meter If the meter shows concentrations greater than 10% of the LEL, or less
than 19 5% or greater than 23% oxygen concentration all personnel will evacuate the Exclusion
Zone (EZ) (see Section 9 1 for definition of EZ) After 15-30 minutes, the designated team
member will again monitor the EZ If oxygen deficiency or greater than 10% LEL are detected,
the Radian site safety and health officer will be notified For concentrations
i 8-1
