The toxicity test consisted of the
hazardous waste LC50 screen test performed by Block Environmental Services Inc. of Pleasant
Hill,California on samples of used and unused charcoal media from carbon filters obtained from
a LensCrafters' store. Severn Trent Laboratories Inc, San Francisco,California, conducted the
ignitability test on used and unused charcoal media from carbon filters obtained from
LensCrafters' stores. The sample IDs for the used and unused charcoal media samples were
09272004-A and 09272004-B respectively.
The results from the two tests are summarized below.
Toxicity Test:The California Department of Toxic Substances Control has adopted regulations
(R-45-78),which define criteria for the identification of hazardous wastes. These criteria are
codified in Chapter 11,Article 3 of Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations. Toxicity to
aquatic life, specifically fish, is one of the criteria used to gauge the hazardous potential of a
waste. An acute 96-hour bioassay is used to determine the LC50 as defined in Section
66261.24(x)(6)of these regulations. This 96-hour LC50 value serves as the numerical indicator
of the toxicity of a waste to aquatic life. The sample is deemed hazardous if the LC50 is less
than 500 mg/L. Both samples tested(09272004-A and 09272004-B)passed the aquatic toxicity
test, with LC50 values greater than 750 mgt, indicating the samples are not hazardous.
6001 Shellmound St.,Suite 700 Emeryville,California 94608-1954 USA Tel: (510)655-7400 Fax: (510)655-9517
