Appendix 1.0 - Definitions
Backup-
Refers to the person who can be easily contacted and immediately respond to provide
assistance to the standby person.
Blanked Off-
The sealing, capping or plugging of lines.
Class 1, Division 1, Group D Equipment-
Electrical equipment that is explosion proof.
Combustible Liquid-
Any liquid having a flash point at or above 100°F.
Confined Space -
Means all areas or pieces of equipment where:
(1) existing ventilation is insufficient to remove dangerous air concentrations and/or oxygen
deficiency may exist or develop, and
(2) the ready access or egress for the removal of a suddenly-disabled worker is difficult due to
the location or size of the opening.
Dangerous Air Concentration-
Is an atmosphere that may cause injury, or illness, due to the presence of flammable or
combustible vapors, or toxic substances in excess of the safe limits.
Designated Tester-
Refers to the person who has received training and has a demonstrated ability in performing
tests for flammable/toxic vapors and oxygen deficiency.
Enclosed Space -
Means any area, enclosure or piece of equipment where a dangerous air concentration and
oxygen deficiency does not exist BUT the ready access or egress for the removal of a suddenly-
disabled worker is difficult due to the location or size of the opening.
Note: All enclosed spaces shall be considered confined spaces until tests verify the space is
safe for entry.
Flammable limits-
Lower Flammable Limit- The minimum concentration of a flammable vapor in air or
oxygen that will ignite if an ignition source is applied.
Upper Flammable Limit- The maximum concentration of a flammable vapor in air or
oxygen that will ignite if an ignition source is applied.
Flammable Range- The range of concentrations of flammable vapor in air or oxygen,
between and inclusive of the lower flammable limit and upper
flammable limit, that will propagate flame or explosion if ignited.
2/99
