GeoSyntec Consultants
1. INTRODUCTION
The Western Farm Service, Inc. (WFS) facility in Vernalis, California is located
at T3S, ME, Section 34. The facility address is 35100 S. Highway 33, Vernalis,
California 95385 (Figure 1).
Results for groundwater samples collected from onsite monitoring wells show
that nitrate, ammonia, and some pesticides are present above detectable limits in
groundwater samples from some of the wells. Depth to groundwater beneath the site is
approximately 30 to 32 feet and the direction of groundwater flow is to the northeast.
2. SCOPE OF WORK
The objective of the next phase of work at the WFS Vernalis site is to identify the
vertical extent of nitrate, ammonia, and pesticides in the uppermost groundwater zone
beneath and downgradient of the site.
The following specific tasks are planned.
2.1 Cone Penetrometer Testing (CPT)and Groundwater Sampling and Analysis
Two groundwater samples will be collected. One CPT/groundwater sample will
be located offsite, approximately 1250 ft north of the intersection of Welty Road and
Highway 33 in the west right-of-way of Welty Road (Figure 2). The CPT/groundwater
sample point will be within the gravel shoulder, about 12 feet west of the Welty Road
center line. The second CPT/groundwater sample point is approximately located in the
northeast corner of the site (Figure 2).
Continuous logs of the subsurface soils will be generated using the CPT. Pore
pressure dissipation tests will be performed as necessary to identify the uppermost
groundwater zone. Groundwater samples will be collected from a permeable zone that
is deeper than the zone presently monitored by wells. The samples will be sent to a
certified analytical laboratory and analyzed for nitrate, ammonia, and pesticides.
J:\WFS\SHELL\VER\VER4\WC98208.DOC 1
