Ms.Nancy Bishop - 3 - 13 September 2001
This monitoring schedule that GeoSyntec proposes to evaluate the progress of the pilot test
consists of measuring the following constituents: dissolved oxygen, iron, manganese, alkalinity,
nitrogen compounds, chloride, sulfur compounds, HRC breakdown products (lactic, pyruvic,
acetic, propionic, and butyric acids), volatile organic compounds, and gases (propene, ethene,
ethane, and methane). This pilot test progress monitoring supplements the quarterly monitoring
specified in the MRP. Geosyntec will report the pilot test monitoring results in the regularly
scheduled quarterly monitoring reports and will evaluate the pilot test at the end of two years.
The proposed injection grid is directly upgradient of MW-2 that contains 1,2-DCP, nitrate and
ammonium. HRC is designed to gradually induce reducing conditions in the local area of
injection that will stimulate microbial communities to reduce nitrate to nitrogen gas, and, if
reducing conditions are strong enough, reduce 1,2-DCP to chloride and methane.
This work plan and accompanying monitoring schedule will provide data necessary to evaluate if
the technology can be successful, to what extent, and within what time frame. The work plan is
approved as proposed.
According to our 10 September 2001 telephone conversation, Ms. Carolyn Kneiblher of
GeoSyntec proposed that field work would commence prior to 31 October 2001, and the initial
HRC report will be included within the Annual Monitoring Report which is due 30 January
2002.
If you have any uestions, you may contact me at (916) 255-3080.
AM RRELL
Private Sites Cleanup Unit
cc: Ms. Carol Oz, San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department, Stockton
Mr. Fred Strauss, Western Farm Service,Vernalis
Mr. Frank R.
