(WFS) facility located in
Vernalis, California. The report states that the site is operating a groundwater
remediation project under NPDES Permit No. CA 0084484 (Permit) and that the total
dissolved solids (TDS) of the remediated groundwater limits the availability to
discharge effluent into the receiving waters (irrigation canal). On behalf of WFS,
GeoSyntec would like to comment on these aspects of the inspection report.
In December 1999, GeoSyntec installed a groundwater extraction and carbon
adsorption treatment system at the WFS Vernalis facility. The purpose of the
groundwater extraction and carbon adsorption treatment system is to remove organic,
non-polar chemicals from groundwater beneath the site.
The system was originally designed to extract and discharge untreated groundwater
to Lateral 4 North, an irrigation canal adjacent to the east boundary of the facility. The
proposed groundwater discharge system was subject to the requirements of the Permit.
J:\WFS\SHELL\VER\NPDESVuly 2000 Inspection Rpt..doc
Regional Offices: Laboratories:
Atlanta,GA•Austin,TX•Boca Raton,FL•Chicago,IL Alpharetta,GA•Atlanta,GA
Columbia,MD•Huntington Beach,CA•Walnut Creek,CA Boca Raton,FL
`w, RECYCLED AND RECYCLABLE t
