9000030AII CON-9
2.0
SITE INSPECTION
2. 1 SITE LOCATION AND GENERAL OPERATIONS
A site visit was conducted by WCC on January 15, 1990 to investigate
possible environmental impacts from operations at the WFS-Vernalis
facility. Areas of suspected contamination were identified based on soil
discoloration, reports of spills, or locations of "dry wells" . Mr. Fred
Strauss and Mr. Tom Lopez of the WFS-Vernalis facility were interviewed
during the site visit. Additional information was obtained through
conversations with Mr. Bill Jensen and Mr. Jim Spink of WFS-Walnut Creek.
The WFS-Vernalis facility (Figure 1) is located at 35100 South Highway
33, Vernalis, San Joaquin County, California, and occupies approximately 6
acres. The site is located in a rural area used primarily as farmland. A
single residence is located to the north of the facility and several
residences are located to the south.
WFS has operated the Vernalis facility since about 1969. The site was
originally developed in 1969 by the M.E. Wilson Company and sold to WFS the
same year. Prior to occupancy by the M.E. Wilson Company, the site was
used as farmland. The site is currently being considered for development
of residential housing.
The facility stores, blends, and distributes bulk liquid and dry
fertilizers. Smaller pre-packaged containers of fertilizers are also
stored and retailed at the facility.
2-1
