(Raney) and has the following comments.
In the Work Plan Raney proposes the remediation by excavation of residual petroleum
hydrocarbon contamination in soil discovered at the former location of an underground storage tank
(UST)on the above referenced property. The tank was used as part of a farming operation. Prior
fieldwork has documented soil contamination vertically to less than 30 feet below surface grade
(bsg) near the east end of the former UST, and less than 10 feet laterally. The proposed
excavation dimensions are approximately 15 feet square by 25 feet deep; proposed confirmation
sampling is one per sidewall and one from the bottom of the excavation. The construction
contractor hired to perform the excavation will submit a site-specific health and safety plan. The
excavation will be conducted using appropriate equipment and safety protocols dictated by the
scope of work and the lithology. Benching and/or shoring may be required to reach the proposed
total depth of the excavation.
SJC/EHD approves the Work Plan with the following comments:
1. Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination was documented in boring B-3 at 25 feet bsg. The
excavation contractor should be prepared to go below this depth if necessary to remove all
detectable contamination.
2. Department of Toxics Substances Control (DTSC) has requested that two additional
confirmation soil samples be collected from the bottom of the excavation to ensure removal
of all contamination noted in boring B-2.
If you have any questions please call Lori Duncan at (209)468-0337.
Donna Heran, RENS, Director
Environmental Health Department
Lori Duncan, Senior REHS Margaret L g"EHS`J
Mitigation Unit IV Program Coordinator Unit IV
cc: Maria Gillette, DTSC, 8800 Cal Center Drive, Sacramento, CA 95826
Pete Ruttan, Raney Geotechnical, 3140 Beacon Blvd, West Sacramento, CA 95691
Steve McAdams, 314 Tamarron Way, San Ramon, CA 94582
