Page 6
Cabral- McAdams Property
August 29, 2006
Job No. 1828-092.02
stockpiled on visqueen. Stockpiled soils should be wetted as necessary to control dust and
covered with visqueen. The visqueen should be secured as necessary to prevent wind disturbance.
Remedial excavation may occur when seasonal rainfall is anticipated. If rainfall occurs during
excavation, controls (such as perimeter berms) should be implemented to prevent storm water
discharge from the remedial areas and stockpiled soils. Additionally, it should be noted that
significant disturbance of surface pavements and landscaping, and potential encroachment into
underground and above ground utility easements, is likely to occur. It will be the responsibility of
the remediation contractor to implement appropriate excavation safety and security precautions.
Stockpile Sampling and Landfill Acceptance
An appropriate number of samples should be collected from the stockpiled soils generated during
remedial excavation. The samples of stockpiled soils should be collected in accord with standard
environmental sampling protocol, and should be submitted to a State-certified laboratory for
analysis for TPH as gasoline and BTEX. The landfill may require additional analyses for
acceptance purposes. The contractor should arrange for acceptance of the excavated/stockpiled
soils at an appropriate permitted landfill facility.
Clearance Soil Sampling
Following excavation, soil samples should be collected from the limits of the excavated area. We
anticipate the collection of four sidewall samples and one excavation bottom sample at this time.
The clearance soil samples should be collected in accord with standard environmental sampling
protocol, and should be submitted to a State-certified laboratory for analysis for TPH as gasoline
and BTEX. Based on the results of the soil analyses, additional excavation may be deemed
necessary.
Excavation Backfill
Because of proposed redevelopment of the property, backfill soils should be mechanically
compacted. Backfill soils should be approved by our firm prior to placement. Engineered
backfill soils should be brought to uniform near-optimum moisture content, placed in the
excavation in six-inch lifts, and compacted to at least 95 percent of the ASTM D1557-02
maximum dry density. Granular"self-compacting" materials (pea gravel or 3/-inch crushed rock)
may be used in lieu of compacted soil below a depth of 12 feet ; to prevent migration of fines,
filter fabric (Mirafi 140N or approved equivalent) should be placed above the granular material
prior to placement of overlying backfill soils.
Reporting
Following the described remedial soil excavation activities, a summary report will be prepared
including: a description of the remedial work completed; the results of the clearance soil
sampling/analytical testing; and soil disposal manifests. Copies of the summary report should be
submitted to the SJCEHD.
