Glossary and Acronyms Version :27.10.4 <br /> Rivers and Canals: A body of water confined within the inland area that has a project depth of 12 <br /> feet or less, including the Intracoastal Waterway and other waterways artificially created for <br /> navigation. <br /> Securing the Source: Steps that must be taken to stop discharge of oil at the source of the spill. <br /> Sinking Agents: Means those additives applied to oil discharges to sink floating pollutants below the <br /> water surface. <br /> Site Characterization: An evaluation of a cleanup site to determine the appropriate safety and <br /> health procedures needed to protect employees from identified hazards. <br /> Site Conditions: Details of the area surrounding the facility, including shoreline descriptions, typical <br /> weather conditions, socioeconomic breakdowns, etc. <br /> Site Safety and Health Plan: A site specific plan developed at the time of an incident that <br /> addresses: <br /> • Safety and health hazard analysis for each operation. <br /> • Personal protective equipment to be used. <br /> . Confined space entry procedures. <br /> Site Security and Control: Steps that must be taken to provide safeguards needed to protect <br /> personnel and property, as well as the general public, to ensure an efficient clean-up operation. <br /> Skimmers: Mechanical devices used to skim the surface of the water and recover floating oil. <br /> Skimmers fall into four basic categories (suction heads, floating weirs, oleophilic surface units, and <br /> hydrodynamic devices)which vary in efficiency depending on the type of oil and size of spill. <br /> Snare Boom: Oil will adhere to the material of which this boom is made of and thus collect it. <br /> Sorbents: Materials ranging from natural products to synthetic polymeric foams placed in confined <br /> areas to soak up small quantities of oil.
