CA ARNG Field Quality Assurance Project Plan
Dedicated Submersible Pump
9.1.5.7 The dedicated electric submersible pump systems installed in CA ARNG groundwater
monitoring wells consist of 2 -inch diameter Grundfos® Redi-Flo2 pumps. Typically, the pump intakes
are set in the middle of the screen interval and/or adjacent to the most permeable layer of the formation
within the screened interval of the well. Pumps installed in wells that typically pump dry are set
approximately 2 feet above the bottom of the well screen.
9.1.5.8 Flow during purging and sampling is controlled using a portable Grundfos® voltage regulator.
The Grundfos® Redi-Flo2 pumps are capable of pumping rates as low as 0.03 gpm (0.1 liters per minute
[lpm]) and up to 10 gpm (26.41pm). Each dedicated submersible pump system has a dedicated discharge
hose that is stored inside the well head, and is used to direct purged water discharge and collect samples.
Water is discharged into a wastewater container. The equipment required to purge and collect
groundwater samples are:
• Grundfos® voltage regulator;
• Electrical generator;
• Water level, PID, pH, temperature, specific conductivity, and turbidity meters;
• Plastic buckets;
• Wastewater container and garden hose; and
• Sample truck.
Dedicated Submersible Pump Pre -Sampling Procedures
9.1.5.9 Prior to initiating well purging, all sampling equipment that may come into contact with well
water are decontaminated following the procedure described in Section 9.3 of this field QAPP.
I. Measure static water level in the well casing to determine the minimum volume of water needed to
be purged from the well prior to the collection of groundwater samples. Water level measurements
are measured to the nearest 0.01 foot using an electronic water level sounder. Water levels are
recorded on the groundwater sampling data sheet.
2. Attach the portable Gmndfos® voltage regulator to the pump and power supply, and start the
generator.
3. Attach the discharge hose to the garden hose and place the opposite end of the garden hose in the
wastewater container. To prevent siphoning, make sure that the hose is not submerged in water in the
wastewater container.
4. Turn the pump on using the switch on the voltage regulator and set the preferred flow rate.
5. If performing macropurge, follow the purge volume calculation procedures shown in the Portable
Submersible Pump Pre -Sampling Procedures in Section 9.1.5.6.
field QAPP.Doc 9-6 May 2000
