CA ARNG Field Quality Assurance Project Plan
9.1.8.2 Chain -of -custody records going to the laboratory will be placed inside a plastic bag. The bag
will be sealed and taped to the inside of the cooler lid. The airbill will be filled out before the samples are l
handed over to the carver. The laboratory will be notified if the shipper suspects that the sample contains
any substance for which the laboratory personnel will take safety precautions.
9.1.8.3 The cooler will be closed and taped shut with strapping tape (filament -type) around both ends. If
_there is a drain in the cooler, it will be taped shut both inside and outside the cooler.
9.1.8.4 Two signed custody seals will be placed on each cooler, one on the front and one on the side to
ensure no tampering occurs. Additional seals may be used if the sampler or shipper determines more
seals are necessary. Wide clear tape will be placed over the seals to help ensure against accidental
breakage.
9.1.8.5 The cooler may be handed over to the overnight carrier, such as Federal Express or a laboratory
courier service. A standard airbill is necessary for shipping environmental samples. No sample will be
held on site for more than 24 hours except during weekends or holidays. Samples collected on the
weekends will be stored under refrigeration and shipped on the following Monday. Sampling for analytes
with extremely short holding times (such as 24 hours) will not be scheduled for weekend delivery. All
U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations will be followed for packaging and shipping.
9.1.8.6 If the samples are sent by common carrier, a -bill of lading will be used. Receipts of bills of
lading will be retained as part of the permanent documentation. If sent by mail, the package will be
registered with receipt requested. Commercial carriers are not required to sign off the custody form as
long as the form is sealed inside the sample cooler and the custody seals remain intact.
-9.1.9 General Field and Laboratory Documentation
9.1.9.1 This section describes field data documentation procedures for field logbooks, geologic field
logs, soil and sediment data sheets, health and safety data sheets, well development data sheets,
groundwater sampling labels, and chain -of -custody forms.
Daily Field Sheets or Logbook
9.1.9.2 Field data sheets or logbooks will provide the means of recording data collection activities. As
such, entries will be described in as much detail as possible so that persons going to the site could
reconstruct a particular situation without reliance on memory.
9.1.9.3 Daily field data sheets will be bound at the end of each event. The data sheets will be assigned
to field personnel each day or logbooks will be assigned for each field event.
9.1.9.4 The data sheet or logbook shall contain the following information:
• Sampling team;
• Date;
0 Well number;
• Volume purged;
field QAPP.DOC 9-12 May 2000
