I
I
i
i
APPENDIX E
ADSORBED MASS &VOLUME CALCULATIONS: TPH-G
Arroyo's Smog;Shop
3012 East Waterloo Road, Stockton, California
Post-Remediation Soil Mass/Volume Assumptions:
• Utilizing Figure 4 and 5, the mass distribution of total petroleum hydrocarbon
quantified as gasoline(TPH-g), can be estimated using two contoured zones of 100
mg/kg and 1 mg/kg.
• Figure 5 was generated utilizing a computer assisted drafting program. The program
has a specific function to calculate the area of a selected object, such as each area
between the above referenced TPH-g isoconcentration intervals. For the site(Figure
5), the program determined the area of the 100 mg/kg interval to be equal to 21 ft2
and the 1 mg/kg interval to be equal to 250 W.
• The area and volume of each contoured zone can be estimated utilizing the program
to determine the area between the above. referenced 100 mg/kg and 1 mg/kg
contoured intervals (Figure 5), and then multiplying the area by the height of the
contoured zone as modeled from cross-section A-A' (Figure 4).
The volume of the shapes can be calculated by the formula:
V = AREA-h, where "area" is determined through the computer assisted drafting
program (Figure 5) and "h" is the averaged height of the contamination (Figure 6).
The average TPH-g concentration in the each zone was estimated by summing the contour
isoconcentration lines and the remediation confirmation soil samples within the selected
area and dividing by the total number. Average TPH-g concentrations within each
i
contoured zone are as follows:
i
• >100 (inner zone) : The sum of 131-25'(500 mg/kg)and the 100 mg/kg contour line;average=
300 mg/kg (equivalent to 0.0003).
• 100-1 mg/kg(outer inner zone):The sum of MW-1 (1.5 mg/kg),132-35(2.6 mg/kg)and 132-45
(2.4 mg/kg), the 100 mg/kg contour line and the 1 mg/kg contour line; average = 26.6 mg/kg
(equivalent to 0.0000266).
I
1) For the estimated inner zone (> 100 mg/kg contour area):
Area . = 21 ft2 and h = 11 ft (height estimated and averaged from cross
section)
V,00 = 21 ft2 • 11 ft =.231 ft3
V100 • typical weight of soil • average concentration of contaminant
231 ft3 . 100 Ibs/ff3 • 0.0000135 -4 6.9 Ibs of TPH-g
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
v
