CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD
CENTRAL VALLEY REGION
CLEANUP AND ABATEMENT ORDER NO.
DRAFT
FOR
ROBERT MONDAVI CORPORATION
ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
This Order is issued to Robert Mondavi Corporation (hereafter known as "Discharger") and is based on
provisions of California Water Code Section 13304 which authorize the Regional Water Quality Control
Board, Central Valley Region (hereafter known as Regional Board) to issue a Cleanup and Abatement
(C&A) Order.
The Executive Officer of the Regional Board finds, with respect to the Discharger's acts, or failure to
act, the following:
1. Waste Discharge Requirements (WDRs) Order No. 87-184 was adopted by the Regional Board on
23 October 1987 for Robert Mondavi Corporation's Robert Mondavi Winery, located at 5950 East
Woodbridge Road in Acampo, San Joaquin County. The WDRs address the wastewater discharge
associated with winery production activity.
2. The Discharger owns and operates the facility and is responsible for complying with this
enforcement action.
3. The winery facility consists of approximately 165 acres. Approximately 100 acres are vineyards,
approximately 57 acres in the northern portion of the site are paved, and approximately 8 acres in
the southern portion of the site contain four facultative process wastewater storage and treatment
ponds. The paved area contains various administrative and processing facilities that are utilized to
produce, bottle, and package a variety of wines.
4. Sanitary wastewater generated at the facility is discharged to several separate septic
tank/leachfield systems, all of which are located within or adjacent to the paved area.
5. The facility currently crushes approximately 100,000 tons of grapes per year. The winery operates
year-round.
6. The facility generates approximately 220,000 gallons of process wastewater per average working
day. Process wastewater consists primarily of crush equipment washwater, general cellar wash
water, spent regenerant from water softening ion exchange units, cooling tower blowdown water,
and storm water runoff from process areas.
7. Chemicals used during various processing activities that are introduced into the waste stream
include calcium carbonate, calcium hypochlorite, citric acid, ammonia compounds, sodium
hydroxide, trisodium phosphate, biodegradable soap, potassium chloride. The strength of the
wastewater is highly variable depending on the season and operations being conducted at the
winery.
