William S. Seekler Civil Engineer
CA Lie. No. 24044
LKQ, Inc.
2041 Navy Dr.
Stockton, CA 95206
This report evaluates the stability against earthquake loads for two identical
horizontal tanks, oval in cross section, each set in its own containment tub at the subject
address.
The global co-ordinates for the location are 37 degrees, 56 minutes and 14.9 seconds
North and 121 degrees, 19 minutes and 04 seconds West. The corresponding Ss is 0.893
and S 1 is 0. 308
The two tanks are approximately 5 feet in length, 2.3 feet across, and 3.7 feet in
vertical dimension, 2 inches off, the ground, and sitting on four legs each, within their
respective containment tubs. Weight is estimated at 2,720 lbs. per tank. Calculated
lateral force by present code is 434 lbs. per tank.
The tanks can be held in place by means of cargo straps rated for at least 1300 lbs.
tension capacity, passing through a metal loop attached with similar capacity to the top of
the tanks. These straps can suffice, if they are placed such that they .point to corners of an
equilateral triangle, i.e. at 120-degree angles in plan view.
The recommended arrangement, with the tanks placed side-by-side, is to place anchor
points between and beyond the ends of the tanks, connecting to the tanks at
approximately 30 degree angles to the Iong axes of the tanks. Two straps are to be
attached to each of these anchor points. Two more anchor points are to be placed centered
on, and at right angles to the tanks. These are each to be connected to their respective
nearer tank. The full arrangement consists of six straps connected to four anchors.
The outer ends of these straps are to be anchored into the slab by 3/8-inch diameter
threaded rods (stainless steel recommended to forestall corrosion), embedded into
concrete at least 3-1/2 inches and set with either Hilti HIT HY-150 or Simpson Strong-
Tie SET epoxy.
The configuration presented in this report can be considered adequate.
Calculations for this analysis and report were done by "service load", or "allowable
stress" design.
,flFE55„N
Ila 24044 m m
sf4 crvL `P
rF or
December 2018 Page 1
