If aggregate base will not be placed within
three days, a sealing compound should be placed on the lime-treated subgrade.
• Aggregate base material should conform to the specifications stated in Section 26 of the
Caltrans Standard Specifications and be compacted as engineered fill to at least 95
percent relative compaction.
• Concrete pavement should have a minimum 28-day compressive strength of 4,000 psi.
Concrete slumps should be from 3 to 4 inches. The concrete should be properly cured in
accordance with PCA recommended procedures and vehicular traffic should not be
allowed for 3 days (automobile traffic) or 7 days (truck traffic).
• Although the pavement section design provided above was developed without considering
steel reinforcement, to help offset plastic shrinkage and improve long term strength,
concrete pavement may be reinforced with at least No. 3 bars, 24 inches on-center, each
way or 6x6-W2.OxW2.0 wire mesh (located 1/3 of the slab thickness from the top of the
slab).
• Construction joint spacing should not exceed 12 feet.
20210067.001A/ST020R111447 Page 30 of 37 May 11, 2020
©2020 Kleinfelder www.kleinfelder.com
