10/7/14
Additional recommended suggestions include offering a face mask to any patient entering the waiting room
showing respiratory distress symptoms and rescheduling appointments for ill patients.Products like Sanityze®
hand sanitizers are suggested to be made readily available for patients and staff alike; consider placing in common
areas such as waiting rooms, bathrooms and treatment rooms.
Ebola—The CDC recommends standard precautions:
Healthcare providers are encouraged to obtain all of your information from the CDC's website at cdc.gov(a
checklist specific to Ebola is included on the site).
The Ebola virus is not spread between humans by aerosol transmission.Neither is HIV-1. When an infection does
occur in humans, the virus can be spread in several ways to others. Ebola is spread through direct contact(through
broken skin or mucous membranes)with:
•blood or body fluids (including but not limited to urine, saliva, feces, vomit, and semen)of a person who is sick
with Ebola
•objects(like needles and syringes)that have been contaminated with the virus
• infected animals
Ebola is not spread through the air or by water,or in general, food.
A person infected with Ebola is not contagious until symptoms appear. Signs and symptoms of Ebola include
fever(greater than 38.6°C or 101.5°F)and severe headache,muscle pain,vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain or
unexplained bleeding or bruising as described in the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC)
Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Health Care-Settings.
While you are in an area where Ebola or Marburg hemorrhagic fever has been reported observe barrier techniques
when in close contact with persons who have Ebola or Marburg hemorrhagic fever or persons and animals
suspected of having Ebola or Marburg virus infection. These barrier techniques include wearing protective gowns,
gloves, and masks in addition to eye protection(e.g., eye glasses)or face shields. Sterilization or proper disposal
of needles and equipment, and proper disposal of patient excretions are also important to prevent the spread of
infection. In some cases dealing with direct contact additional PPE may be required such as double gloving.
Respecting CDC's guideline for use of standard precautions, Crosstex recommends a face mask with ASTM Level
3 protection and specifically would recommend the Secure Fit®technology mask line—which was developed
after extensive research at Stony Brook University Hospital in New York to provide up to three times more
protection from exposure to infectious particulates(spray/aerosols)than a standard face mask. As it pertains to
PPE,we would encourage healthcare providers to read the following article at the CDC website:
Virus Transfer from Personal Protective Equipment to Healthcare Employees'Skin and Clothing
htlp://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/14/8/pdf.s/08-0085.pdf
Should you have additional questions surrounding current media news stories or CDC recommendations, you can
feel free to:
➢ Call the Crosstex Infection Control Helpline M-F, 8am-5pm MST at 1-8558-STERILE
➢ Find future notifications and news breaks at: CrosstexS.com
➢ Direct email inquiries to: customercare(a_crosstex.com
